Terms of use

Version 2026-11-06

Draft. These terms are a working draft for the private beta and have not yet had legal review. [[Remove this box once reviewed.]]

1. Agreement

These terms govern your use of this site, operated by [[OPERATOR LEGAL NAME]] ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the site you agree to them and to our privacy notice. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

2. Who may use it

You must be at least [[MINIMUM AGE, e.g. 16]] years old and able to form a binding agreement. You must give accurate details when you register.

3. Private beta

The site is currently a private beta. Accounts are approved at our discretion and we may decline, pause or withdraw access. Features, word lists and statistics may change, be reset, or contain mistakes. We try to avoid losing your progress, but during the beta we cannot promise it. [[Decide whether to commit to keeping progress.]]

4. Your account

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

If you find a security problem, please report it to [[SECURITY CONTACT EMAIL]] before disclosing it publicly.

6. Content and ownership

The site, its software, word list, questions, explanations and audio belong to us or our licensors and are protected by law. [[Add attributions or licence notices for any third-party dictionary, pronunciation or audio sources you use.]] We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the site for your own learning. You keep ownership of anything you send us, such as flag notes, and allow us to use it to improve the site.

7. Learning content is a guide

Definitions, pronunciations, origins and spelling are provided for study. We work to keep them accurate and welcome flags, but they may contain errors, and the site is not a substitute for an authoritative dictionary or for professional instruction.

8. Payments

The site is free during the private beta. If paid plans are introduced, their price, billing period, renewal and refund terms will be shown before you pay, and you will have to agree to them separately. [[Replace with full subscription terms, and check consumer cancellation rules, before charging.]]

9. Availability

We aim to keep the site running but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may change or discontinue any part of it, and will try to give notice of planned downtime through the banner shown on the site.

10. Suspension and ending

You may stop using the site, and ask us to delete your account, at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or create risk for others or the service. [[Describe whether, and how, a notice or appeal is offered.]]

11. Warranties and liability

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties and are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data or profits. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, or reduces rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live. [[Lawyer to review: any overall cap on liability.]]

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will change the version above and, for material changes, tell you and ask you to accept the new version before you continue. [[Confirm the notice method.]]

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [[GOVERNING JURISDICTION]], and the courts of [[JURISDICTION]] have jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer law gives you the right to use your local courts.
